For years, Apple has been at the forefront of technology and as time has progressed they have become more adamant about incorporating safety into today’s phones. There latest and greatest phone, the Apple iOS 11 is no exception with its new feature that provides easy access to 911. The new feature, known as Emergency SOS, allows you to be connected to 911 by simpy pressing the click/wake button five times you will be connected to 911.
While this feature is new to the phone, it was initially launched on the watchOS 3 in 2016, but…there was a catch. The user could use the side button to trigger the call to 911 but the user’s iPhone had to be nearby or the watch had to be connected to a WiFi network that had WiFi Calling enabled. When you are in an emergency situation, these things might not all line up for you, which could lead to a major delay in getting in touch with 911.
The addition of the emergency call system simply makes sense for Apple and they have tested it on some of the iOS 10 betas but everyone dropped support for it with the exception of India. Luckily, it is now available on the iOS 11 in the US and here are some tips on how to use it.
In order to activate it so that it calls emergency services to your rescue, Click on Settings, then tap Emergency SOS.
You then have the option of choosing the “Countdown Sound,” after the feature has been activated. This is a good option for those who are worried that they will accidentally press the emergency button, as it gives you a chance to cancel it. You can always set this option for silent.
For the iPhone 7 and earlier, your device will give you to the count of three before it contacts 911 or it will automatically dial when you press the side button five times in a row.
An optional addition to the emergency contacts feature is the ability to add contacts. When you open your Health app, click on the Medical ID and tap “Create Medical ID.” If you already have one assigned, click on edit, then scroll down and click on “add emergency contact.” You will then choose one of the contacts from your list, such as a spouse or parent. This feature allows you to add more than one emergency contact so feel free to add more and click done when you have finished your list.
If you have an emergency situation and 911 gets contacted, your emergency contacts will receive a text shortly after, alerting them to your location.
We’ve come a long way when it comes to communication and Apple is proving that they are only getting better with time and more knowledge.
We started with landlines only, then pagers, then giant cell phones, then flip phones. And now, all we have to do is tap or slide a finger across our iPhone screen and we can talk, video conference, shop, check the weather or check in on a flight.
Who knows what we will be able to do with these handy devices ten years from now!
